As a professional photographer, I traveled independently to Afghanistan in 2003 and 2010 to photograph and interview women. I wanted to bring a more diverse and nuanced view of Afghanistan back to Western audiences. I’ve been giving my dynamic multi-media presentations on the women I met since 2004, mostly to university audiences. My book, Gathering Strength: Conversations with Afghan Women has been endorsed by Khaled Hosseini, author of “The Kite Runner” and “And the Mountains Echoed”.
I have created a variety of speaking topics and can customize them to fit your needs. “Afghanistan: A View from the Ground” shares recent developments and issues the country faces. “Human Rights in Afghanistan” shares stories of the women from a human rights perspective. “Gathering Strength” introduces some of the women in the book of that name and gives some background not included there. These presentations are best given in an hour plus time for questions, but can be adapted to longer or shorter events. “Business Women of Afghanistan” is a new 25-minute presentation that talks about my journey to create and run the Afghan Women’s Project and shares the stories of four Afghan businesswomen.
