The sleepy dusty town of Lubbock, Texas was the perfect incubator for a shy quiet child with big dreams. I’ve lived a million lives and fulfilled a million roles since then. After thirty successful years in public education as a classroom teacher and then a counselor, I finally took the advice I’d given to high school students for so many years. I launched a new life as a career counselor, a writer, an executive producer of an educational television show, a radio talk show host and my most challenging role as the Democratic candidate for the Texas House of Representatives. Just as Dr. Seuss predicted, “oh the places you’ll go!!”; so I have done. To India for my book launch, to the rural areas of Tamil Nadu to speak about education, to talk about careers and education to young people in towns all over Texas. I have experience and experience is a valuable commodity to be shared. Through my personal narrative and most of all, through the stories of those I’ve encountered on my journey, I speak about life’s possibilities in politics, the business of writing, in social consciousness and social justice movements and I talk about the book that inspired all of it. Of Tapestry, Times and Tears is a historical fiction about the 1947 Partition of India and the strong female character who lost her ego and gained her soul.
